Team racing at Royal Burnham Yacht Club

The team arrived punctually on Saturday morning as directed by the Bill Barnes spreadsheet.  The team acclimatised and checked into their very comfortable rooms.  After lunch the briefing was given and boats – beautifully maintained Royal Burnham One designs – were allocated.  As the boats were rigging the race officer asked the crews to hold on their moorings until a heavy squall passed through.  All heard this instruction except your Class Captain who sailed off into the teeth of the strong wind and rain.  As the wind abated a little the rest of the fleet assembled a little up river of the Royal Burnham club house and racing began.

Three races were possible on Saturday afternoon.  The kindest way of expressing the Itchenor performance was to say that each crew took it in turns to score 4th, 5th and 6th place in each of the races.

Tea is not normally on the agenda at Burnham but in honour of our visit a splendid affair was laid on.  This was a precursor to a splendid evening of cocktails followed by a curry supper and then dancing.  Yes, dancing!  While the Itchenor team may have been shown the way ’round the race track, they led the way on the dance floor.

Sunday dawned bright and clear – but with little wind.  An attempt was made and the boats, with a little assistance from a rib, made their way to the start.  After holding for while on a nearby jetty the race officer decided there was just enough wind to start a race and duly went into a sequence.  The ebb tide had by then started in earnest and the RBODs drifted slowly back towards the clubhouse.

As lunch time approached there was no prospect of any wind, three sounds signals accompanied the abandonment signal to the relief of all – crews and spectators.

Lunch was another treat – roast beef or pork with all the trimmings.  Speeches were made and the trophy presented – first by RBYC to Itchenor for last year’s victory and back again to recognise the result of the races on Saturday.

The Itchenor team: Bill Barnes, Chis Blevins, Liz and Phil Chowiencyzk, Chris Leaver, Tony Monks, David Priscott, Charlotte and David Smith.
